In August 2023, it took about twice as long to sell an EV in the U.S. as it did the previous January. Prices of EVs are down 22% year-over-year and that's mainly driven by Tesla. About two thirds of EVs sold are Elon Musk's brand. Companies like Ford have ramped up hybrid production as demand has leveled off. While slightly more than half of consumers say EVs are the future and will eventually replace Internal Combustion Engines, less than a third of dealers say so. Used EV prices are falling. Studies show that used EV prices fell somewhere around 30 percent in September and October 2023 from the same period in 2022. Used overall vehicle prices including ICE, hybrid and EVs declined by only around 5 percent. It bodes well for buyers, but some say it is yet another sign demand is faltering and that consumers may see EVs as a bad investment. Others say those fears are overblown. Interest rates are high and consumers are pulling back on spending. And despite price drops, EVs are still expensive. Update: On January 26 2023, Toyota announced that CEO and President Akio Toyoda would step down in April and assume the role of chairman of the board. Environmentalists and electric vehicle advocates are accusing the world's largest automaker, Toyota, for dragging its feet, and even opposing electrification. But Toyota, which sells 10.5 million cars a year in 170 countries, argues that many of those markets aren’t ready for electric vehicles. The company announced a $35 billion investment in EVs in December 2021 along with an investment of equal size in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. As of early 2023, the company sells only one electric vehicle, the bZ4X, which it has only sold in small quantities. It has, however, said it is planning to release 30 EV models by 2030, which would be a quarter of the total number of models it currently makes. Will it be able to catch-up with the rest of the world, or is Toyota actually in the driver’s seat by going slow in EV adoption given how small the global market share is in total vehicle sales? CNBC Marathon explores how Tesla, Rivian and Dodge’s new electric vehicles are transforming the automotive industry. Over the past decade, Dodge has dug deep into its performance car heritage and become a brand known for brash American muscle cars with supercharged V-8 engines and ridiculous amounts of horsepower. But tightening regulations, rising fuel prices and the rise of the SUV are putting the squeeze on Dodge's so-called “brotherhood of muscle.” It recently debuted the Charger Daytona SRT EV, an electric car that looks a lot like its popular supercharged Challenger and Charger. Will Dodge fans or EV buyers want it? Five years after Elon Musk first announced the Tesla Semi, it’s finally hitting roads. CNBC visited Pepsi’s Frito-Lay facility in Modesto, California, where it is using the new electric trucks, to see whether the Semis live up to the hype. A new electric vehicle company hopes to take on Tesla with its outdoor adventure trucks and SUVs. And its deal with Amazon to build 100,000 electric delivery vans could help it succeed. Founded in 2009, Rivian is focusing on upscale electric trucks and SUVs with an emphasis on outdoor adventure. CNBC's John Rosevear calls them the "Patagonia of electric vehicles." Last month, Rivian and Amazon rolled out the first of the electric vans. They are starting to deliver packages in a handful of cities, including Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago and Phoenix. After manufacturing's 40-year cycle of decline in the U.S., officials in Washington are trying to bring it back. This move could be a boom or bust for huge swaths of the American Midwest. Many people are thinking we’ll all own an electric vehicle in 10 years time, but I’m not so sure. I believe there’s a better solution than EVs, at least for the foreseeable future, and it’s not fuel cells. It’s more practical, and it’ll help save the planet. Just a few years ago, you'd find a desultory Tesla or Chevy Bolt at our 10Best testing, usually plugged in while the rest of the vehicles cycled in and out of the lot. Now there are enough EVs to warrant their own showdown. And that happened quickly. The EV shopper can choose from pickups, SUVs, and sedans, some courtesy of entirely new companies. Charging is getting faster and easier to find, if not easier to get working. At least two new models, the Rivian R1S and Cadillac Lyriq, were launched the same week as our event. Many more are on the way. Eventually, whether in 10 years or 20, all cars will be electrified, and staging an EV-specific contest will be like choosing the best tires made of rubber. Right now, though, we're at an inflection point—EVs are still a small fraction of the overall market, but a staggering 40 percent of the new-car launches we covered last year were for battery-powered vehicles. The momentum is building, so we figure now's the time to weigh in and prod and nudge the manufacturers to build the kind of stuff we like to drive. Listen to most major news outlets (and plenty of anti-EV sorts) and you'll very quickly hear about massive numbers of electric vehicles sitting on dealer lots, with nobody willing to buy them. Sometimes, the increased numbers of EVs on dealer lots are used to exemplify the conceit that nobody wants to buy electric vehicles and they're nothing but a failure. Sometimes, it's used to argue against world governments and EV transition goals. But the fact of the matter is that EV sales are at all-time highs in many markets around the world, including the USA. And the increases of EVs sitting on dealer lots?
